What question or problem did you work on?
We explored whether modern digital manufacturing technologies could produce complex wooden artwork faster and more accurately than traditional handmade methods. Our project focused on comparing manual craftsmanship with CNC machining to see how technology can improve efficiency, precision, and accessibility for people without advanced artistic skills.
Why did you do this project?
We wanted to test the functionalities of a CNC milling machine and discover whether it could create detailed artistic designs more effectively than manual methods. We were also interested in learning how technology can reduce the time, effort, and professional skills normally required for this type of work.
How did you make your project or solve this problem?
First, we experimented with creating designs manually using a rotary tool and realized that even simple shapes required a large amount of time, effort, and manual skills. After that, we designed our artwork digitally using Fusion 360, a professional 3D design software, and exported the file to the CNC milling machine. The CNC machine then carved the design automatically, and we sanded the product by hand for the finishing touches. This method allowed us to achieve great details and complex results in a short amount of time.
What did you find out?
We realized that a job done by hand requires more energy, patience, and advanced manual skills, whereas a job done by a CNC machine is, faster and can be more complex and detailed. We also found that digital manufacturing makes it possible for beginners to create professional-quality designs.
Why do your results matter?
We learned that we can achieve very good and professional results thanks to machines and 3D design programs. This project shows that digital manufacturing tools such as the CNC machines can help anyone to produce high quality artwork even without many years of manual experience.

What could you do next?
We want to improve the final look of the project by painting the designs and apply varnish. We also want to add a decorative frame.
