How do we represent a digital model of a hydroelectric power station with their essential parts? What challenges presents to do a functional structure in Minecraft?
We were inspired by our trip to Itaipu, so we applied our knowledge about structures and how water works to represent the Itaipu hydroelectric power station in Minecraft, a tool that we already know and allow us to visualize our construction.
Our objective was to digitally represent the fundamental parts of a hydroelectrical power station that we discover in our trip such as: Contention wall, turbines, gates and control zone, we worked in teams to plan and build each section of the hydroelectrical power station and using blocks to represent the materials.
1-We analyze photos and blueprints of Itaipu hydroelectrical power station
2-We organize the design in team: Walls, canal, turbines, gates, and roads
3-We used specific blocks to recreate real life materials like concrete, steel and flowing water
4-We checked the symmetry and the scale
We find out how a design of a hydroelectrical power station needs to fit into a set of natural and technic criteria. We also learn how to use minecraft in an educative way to represent real life engineering process.
Our results show that it is possible to create a functional hydroelectrical power station in minecraft, we also learn that minecraft is a more versatile tool that just a game, and we now understand how a hydroelectrical power station works.
We could add a control system with redstone to simulate the opening of gates, or we could also add informative sings in the hydroelectrical power station to use it as a virtual museum.
