The Judges Committee has awarded this submission EXCELLENCE IN STRATEGY GAME DESIGN
PROJECT SUMMARY
In my AEP after-school club, I was supposed to make a probability game which we would play after we were done. After brainstorming, I devised a strategy game based on Capture the Flag & war. I made my tokens out of cardboard & my playmat out of construction paper. What came out of this project was something I enjoyed making & I will probably make more games like this in the future.
WHY?
"I did this project for my Academic Enrichment Program. I was supposed to make a game for my probability unit, but... I did something even more complex & better: A whole board game!
I named it WAR - Last Man Standing."
HOW?
I used cardboard, construction paper, markers & tape. First, I made a playmat/board with construction paper. Then, I drew the places to place & move the tokens. I made the tokens with cardboard & markers.
WHAT?
When I finished my game, I tested it (played it) with my AEP classmates. We started playing, & they got hooked to it in the first 5 seconds! They rated it 4.9/5.
SO WHAT?
I consider the results of my project a beta version of the game. Receiving feedback from my classmates was therefore very important. For example, the students who played it said that it took too long to end the game; for its final version, I will try to figure out a way to make the game shorter.
WHAT'S NEXT?
To Improve my game, I need to make it shorter & more understandable for the players. It took some time for my peers to understand my game, so it is clear to me that I'll need to make an instruction manual.
REFERENCES & ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I want to thank Mrs. Lei Lei, my amazing AEP teacher, & Dr. Sheldon, for supporting me & giving me some ideas. I couldn't have done it without them.
JUDGES FEEDBACK
Great project from the sustainability point of view. You use recycled materials to assembly the pieces and use a great deal of imagination to create the game. It is a great practice to reflect the kind of improvements you would like to add and it will also be a good idea to keep a detail written and visual evidence of the process. Keep up the good work!
