How does a hydroelectric dam work, and what structures comprise it? Is it possible to simulate its parts in an interactive digital environment?
This project was born after the study trip. We set out to digitally recreate the dam using Unreal Engine for Fortnite (UEFN) so our classmates could explore it and interact with its components.
1- We investigated the structure and operation of the real dam.
2- We designed the main structure (retaining wall, water channel, turbines, and walkway).
3- We added interactivity with buttons, missions, and guided information within the Fortnite environment.
4- We tested and improved the map to make it accessible, educational, and functional.
We learned about the essential parts of a dam, how water generates energy, and how to use UEFN to represent complex ideas in the form of an educational game.
We learned how to use Unreal Engine to design a realistic simulation and understand how a hydroelectric dam operates. Our project shows the connection between energy production, environmental factors, and technology. Thanks to this experience, we now understand the complexity behind large-scale energy infrastructure like Itaipu.
We could integrate questions about Itaipu and compare it with other hydroelectric dams to deepen the learning experience. We could also make the project collaborative and multiplayer to promote teamwork and simulate the roles within a power plant. In future versions, we would improve the visual design and add more interactivity.
We used the Hoover Dam, the gravity dam, and the Itaipu Dam as references. We also thank teacher Claudia for helping us with the project.
